This was one of the first fantasy works I read that was intended for adults. I was utterly captivated by the notion of Amber as the one, true world and everything else -- including our own contemporary Earth -- as shadow dimensions, pale reflections. I also loved the characters and the ruthless interpersonal dynamics of Amber's royal family, and the notion of the family's use of trump cards as a psychic link to one another. And the Arthurian elements! And the interplay between light and dark, order and chaos! It's about time I re-read this series.
