The Canterbury Tales - Nevill Coghill, Geoffrey Chaucer Geoffrey Chaucer hath a blog

The original short story collection. Read translated into modern English in high school, in Middle English in college. Loved it both times. The stories are at turns beautiful, ribald, tragic and funny.

In high school, our teacher assigned us a project to either memorize the opening in Middle English or to write our own tale. A group of us got together to write our own set of framed tales called The Woodstock Tales about a pilgrimage to the famed music festival in the late 60s on a VW bus. My poem was about a teenage girl caught up in the riots at the '68 Democratic convention in Chicago. We made our teacher cry.
