Read for a college British lit class circa 1995 -- 19th & 20th century novelists, I think it was? Oh, how I loved the Brits and eschewed all things American in those days.
Anyway. I don't remember much about this book except a general feeling that I liked it, and that it had some kind of metaphor about characters "having a heart," which referred to a character who had a heart condition, but lacked any kind of emotional heart, if I recall correctly. And there were lots of adulterous affairs.
