Howards End (Penguin Modern Classics) - E.M. Forster Possibly Forster's most brilliant exploration of class divisions in Edwardian England.

This passage -- representing the theme at least of Margaret Schlegle if not the book itself -- defined me around the age of 20:

Only connect! That was the whole of her sermon. Only connect the prose and the passion and both will be exalted, and human love will be seen at its height. Live in fragments no longer.

It's an idea I've come back to recently without recalling its origins. Perhaps it's time for a re-read.
